Programme objective

The aim of this programme, which is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), is to train communications professionals who understand the full spectrum of the media market, with special emphasis on the principles and practices of news and programming and the tools of digital communications in the functioning and institutional systems of both the private sector and public administration. Graduates will not only possess the most advanced theoretical knowledge with respect to new media (web 2.0), e-communications and digitalisation, but will also be able to apply those skills to their respective work situations.

Our programme became the first academic programme in Central and Eastern Europe to be accredited by the UK-based Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), recognising the quality of the content and the delivery.

We do not offer specialisations in this programme, but given the institutional specifics of BBU, we place special emphasis on business knowledge and international communications. For students of this major, we offer personalised talent management, which also helps in professional career building. Our media studio is suitable for 21st century education, equipped with all the necessary tools and software utilised in the industry today.

Fundamental knowledge of the social sciences

Key subjects: basic legal and administrative knowledge, economics, European history and culture, political science, stylistics, and creative writing.

Professional knowledge

Key subjects: communication theory, semiotics and visual communication, inter-cultural communication, communication and media law, media, media economics, media and politics, network communication, marketing communication, PR and reputation management, globalisation and multiculturalism, news and programming, integrated organisational communication, international digital communication, international negotiation techniques.

In addition to the above, it is also possible to acquire a high level of professional language skills throughout the course of this programme.

Our Communication and Media Studies graduates will be able to:

  • Understand and use all elements of social media, e-communication, and digitalisation,
  • Understand the operational mechanisms of social phenomena and their sub-systems, as examined by communication and media studies,
  • Know the most important factors of the social, structural, economic, and political processes determining the field of communications and media,
  • Confidently manage print and digital literature resources, social science and media research databases and the tools for their operation, and effectively process new knowledge in their field.

Our graduates will be able to work in positions ranging from the PR and communication departments of multinational companies to communication specialists of government agencies, as journalists and experts in online and print media, as well as radio and TV editors and broadcasters. Employers looking for professionals in the labour market are happy to choose our graduates because they have useful, practical skills in addition to theoretical knowledge. Our graduates can also stand on their own in the areas of public information, information analysis and planning and event management.
